The Carolyn Kinder Collection gathers home furnishings by Carolyn Kinder, the painter turned decor designer, and most of them work at the edges of a room: a marble drink table beside a reading chair, a beveled mirror catching lamplight, a large canvas that sets the color for everything under it. Uttermost produces her designs, which favor marble, crystal, stone, bronze and brass.
Carolyn Kinder Home Decor Began With a Painter's Eye
Carolyn Kinder (1943 to 2023), the designer behind the Carolyn Kinder Collection, was a painter and art teacher first. In 1974 she founded Kinder-Harris, which twice won an ART award for Best Picture Manufacturer. She sold it in 1992 and launched Carolyn Kinder Inc. to design coordinated home accent collections, and the company was Carolyn Kinder International by 2002. In 2000 she became the first woman to receive the ART Academy of Achievement Award, and by 2005 Uttermost called her a licensed designer. Her motto was "Trendless, Timeless, Well-Traveled Style." Her son Robert Kinder and lead designer David Simpson carry on the studio in St. Petersburg, Florida.
You can see the painter in the line. Hand-painted canvas carries as much weight in this collection as the tables, so buy in that order: the wall first, then the table that answers it.
Carolyn Kinder Side Tables: Small Tops, Dense Materials
Most of the side tables in this collection are drink tables, with round tops about the width of a dinner plate on bases roughly two feet tall. What they give up in surface they make back in material: solid black marble, brown marble, ribbed crystal, white stone, brushed brass. Set one beside a leather chair at seven in the evening and it reads as a small, heavy object with light on its rim. Black marble belongs in a Dark Academia room. White stone sits better in an Organic Modern one.
Do not ask a drink table to hold a lamp. A 10" top is for a glass and a book. For a working surface, go to the 20" Round Brown Marble Top Side Table with Black Metal Base, or pair a drink table with one of our larger marble and wood side tables and split the job between them.
Carolyn Kinder Wall Art and Mirrors
Hand-Painted Canvas Wall Art, Hung First
Expect four feet or more on the long side, in gray and blue, ivory and taupe, sienna and green. Build a dark room around the loudest of them, the 50" x 74" Red and Blue Abstract Hand Painted Canvas Art Black Frame: hang it, repeat the red once in a single object, and let the blue fall into shadow. A quieter room does better with the ivory and taupe canvas, which goes nearly tonal after dark. To compare scale against other makers, browse our large-scale wall decor.
Wall Mirrors With a Beveled Edge
Each mirror here has a beveled edge, and that cut throws a thin line of light a flat edge cannot. The 30" x 66" Arched Wall Mirror with Antiqued Beveled Mirror Tiles splits its reflection into aged panes, which softens a wall instead of doubling the room. Hang it across from a lamp rather than a window. For another designer's take, compare the Grace Feyock mirrors.
Carolyn Kinder Furniture and Sculpture
Fir veneer laid in parquetry gives the 49" Fir Veneer Parquetry Credenza with Iron Bar Pulls a grain that changes direction across its front, so the wide face does not read as one flat plank. The 42" Small Round Satin Black Dining Table and Entryway Table serves as a breakfast table or stands alone in an entry. On top of the credenza, the Set of 2 White Faux Stone Stacked Sculptures on Bronze Finish Bases adds height without clutter. For more dark metal on pale stone, the Billy Moon home decor page has antique brass candle holders on white marble bases.
One wall, one small table. If the canvas and the marble settle on the same color, the rest of the room has something to follow.
