In a dark bathroom the vanity is the whole argument
A bathroom has one piece of furniture, so that piece decides the room. In a moody bath the vanity carries the wood, the hardware and the only horizontal line the eye can rest on. The bathroom vanities in this Dark Luxury Lookbook are chosen for how the cabinet reads under a single warm sconce: fluted walnut catches light in stripes, blackened oak goes almost to silhouette, and a stone top in honed rather than polished finish keeps the reflection soft.
Width and depth before finish
Measure the wall, subtract the swing of the door and the depth of the toilet clearance, and buy the widest vanity that leaves eighteen inches to the nearest fixture. Depth matters more than people expect: twenty-two inches is the standard, but in a narrow bath eighteen inches of depth keeps the walkway and changes very little at the sink. Every dark bath here was planned around luxury bathroom furniture that fit first and photographed second.
The mirror sets the mood, not the tile
A framed mirror in brass or black, hung so its center sits at eye level, does more for a dark bathroom than any tile choice. Frameless mirrors read as hotel; a heavy frame reads as a room someone decorated. Our bathroom mirrors are sized to the vanity, never wider than the cabinet and ideally a few inches narrower, so the wood shows on both sides.
Sconces at the sides, never above
The mistake is a bar light over the mirror. It lights the top of the head and shadows the face. Two wall sconces at sixty-five inches, one either side of the mirror, light a face evenly and leave the ceiling dark, which is the point. Warm bulbs, 2700K, on a dimmer if you can.
Materials that survive water and shadow
Dark rooms show streaks, so matte finishes everywhere: honed stone, oiled or sealed wood, brushed rather than polished metal. A single plant with real leaves against a dark wall is the one bit of color a moody bath needs; anything more starts to look like a spa brochure.
