Modern Table Lamps

Modern table lamps bring light down to the height people actually live at. On a side table, a console or a nightstand, a lamp puts a warm pool where you sit, read or talk, and the room gets shadow and depth instead of flat overhead light.

Table lamps for living room seating

Put a lamp beside every place someone sits. Two or three lamps around a living room, switched on in place of the ceiling light, change how it feels at night. Start with the seat where you read most, then work outward to the sofa ends and the console.

Getting table lamp height right

Beside a sofa or chair, set the bottom of the shade near eye level when you are seated. That hides the bulb and sends the light onto the page. Measure the side table before buying: a tall lamp on a tall table can shine straight into your eyes.

Table lamp pairs and singles

A matched pair flanking a sofa or a bed gives order. Around the rest of the room, a shared tone or height is enough to hold unmatched lamps together, and too many identical lamps make a room look staged.

A bedside table lamp that does the job

Beside a bed, the shade should sit just above shoulder height when you are sitting up against the headboard. A shade that hides the bulb keeps glare off the pillow. Choose the lamp after the nightstand, not before, so the two read as a pair. Reach for the switch from the pillow before you commit, because a lamp you have to lean for tends to stay off.

Marble and onyx table lamps

Heavy bases read calm and grounded, and onyx glows when lit from within. They suit consoles and living rooms. On a narrow side table, check that the base is wide enough to sit steady.

Matte black table lamps

Slim black frames add line without bulk, and a brass accent warms them up close. They suit a desk or a darker study, where a pale base would glare against the walls.

Ceramic and glass buffet lamps

Ceramic columns and glass globes bring softer color into the room. They work well on a buffet, where a pair can frame a mirror or art.

Lamps and the light around them

A table lamp handles the middle height in a room. For the corners a table cannot reach, add one of our modern floor lamps. Then use warm bulbs, around 2700K, in every lamp so they all give the same warm color.

Put the first lamp beside the seat you use most and live with it for a few evenings. The darkest spot that remains is where the next lamp goes.
