That item has been discontinued, but here are similar options.
A couch pulled away from the wall leaves a raw edge behind it. Upholstery has a back nobody designed to be looked at, and in a room where the seating floats, that back is the first thing you meet walking in. A sofa table fixes it by giving the couch a finished side.
The piece is a console by construction. What separates a sofa table from the rest of our console tables is proportion: longer, shallower, set at a height that meets the back cushion instead of hovering above it. Depth is where that shows first, and a narrow console table behind the couch keeps the walking lane open in a way a standard console never manages.
How high a sofa table behind the couch should sit
Sofa table height is measured off the back of the couch, not off the floor, and it is the measurement people skip. The top should land level with the couch back or an inch below, which for most seating means 28 to 32 inches. Taller and the table crowds the shoulder line, so the couch reads as sunk. Much shorter and the surface drops out of view. Measure the couch back from the floor before you shop.
A sofa table with storage, without the bulk
Drawers behind a couch are the quietest storage in a living room, close to hand and invisible from the seat. The trade is depth, since a real drawer pushes the piece toward 18 inches. Our console tables with storage hold that line where they can, and an open lower shelf is the compromise when the floor stays clear.
Wood, marble and metal, and what each does to the room
Material sets how much visual weight sits at the back of the room. A solid wood console table in walnut, oak or teak brings grain and warmth into the middle of the floor, which is what a pale couch wants behind it. Stone does the opposite. A marble sofa table holds light on its surface and stays cool against upholstery, sharpening a room that has gone soft. Thin iron frames almost vanish at a distance, so the top floats and the couch keeps the mass. In warm evening lamplight wood glows and marble reflects, and that one difference changes the back half of the room more than any silhouette will.
A long sofa table still stops short of the arms
Aim for two thirds to three quarters of the couch, so the table stops short of both arms and the eye reads a margin rather than a near miss. A 90 inch couch sits well behind a 60 to 68 inch top. A long sofa table matched exactly to the couch is the most common mistake here, and it always looks like a shipping error. The exception is a couch floating in an open plan, where the full length becomes a divider on purpose.
A thin sofa table keeps the walkway open
Sixteen inches is the depth ceiling for most rooms and 12 to 14 reads calmer still. Leave 30 inches of clearance behind the piece or nobody uses that path twice. The nuance almost nobody mentions: check the couch back for a slope. Many modern frames lean, so a table that sits flush at the top gaps at the floor, and a thin sofa table hides that gap where a deep one puts it on display.
What a table behind the couch actually does
Sofa tables do three jobs, and it pays to know which one you are buying for. The piece holds light at the right height. It takes the daily debris off the cushions. It draws the line where the seating ends.
Why a console table behind the couch earns its place after dark
A floor lamp beside a couch throws light down from above the shoulder. A lamp on a sofa table throws it forward, across the seat, at the height of someone already sitting. That is the warmer of the two. Keep the shade bottom at seated eye level so the bulb never shows.
Styling sofa tables so the top survives past Tuesday
Keep about two thirds of the top clear. A lamp at one end, something low and useful at the other, one object between them. Anything here is seen from behind while you stand and from the side while you sit, and objects that only read from one angle look like clutter from the other.
What the room does once the couch has a back
Put the table in and the seating stops feeling adrift. The couch gains a spine, the lamp finds a home that is not the floor, and the open side of the room resolves. A small piece for the order it brings, usually the sign of a good one.
