An entryway is a sentence, not a room
You pass through a foyer in four seconds, so it has to say one thing clearly. In a dark house that sentence is usually a long low table, a mirror above it and a single lamp, in that order of importance. The entryway tables in this Dark Luxury Lookbook are narrow on purpose; a foyer table deeper than fourteen inches steals the walkway and makes the front door feel smaller than it is.
Length from the wall, depth from the walkway
Run the table to within eight or ten inches of the wall's edges on each side, then choose depth by what remains between the table and the opposite wall or the stair. Thirty-six inches of clear passage is the minimum that feels generous. Every foyer staged here started with that math before we chose the luxury entryway furniture that went in it.
The mirror is the light source you did not buy
A dark entryway has almost no daylight and the least ceiling height of any room. A framed mirror above the table, hung with its bottom edge six to eight inches above the surface, borrows light from whatever room is behind you and doubles the one lamp you have. The entryway mirrors here lean to brass and black frames because those two finishes look right against walnut, plaster and painted black doors alike.
One lamp, placed off center
The mistake is a pair of matching lamps flanking the mirror. It is symmetrical and it is dead. One lamp at the end of the table, a bowl or a stack of books at the other end, and the arrangement has movement. Warm bulb, low wattage, left on. An entryway lamp that is always lit is the cheapest luxury in the house.
What sits on the table
Very little. A tray for keys, one object with height, and either a plant or nothing. Consider a console table with a shelf below if you need somewhere for shoes or a bag, and keep the shelf as edited as the top. Baskets under a console are where dark entryways go to die.
The strongest foyers in this gallery have a dark wall behind the table and a lighter room visible beyond. That contrast, dark arrival and warm interior, is the whole point of a moody entry. It makes the house feel like it opens up as you walk in.
