Choose a dining room chandelier in this order: size to the table, hanging height, then finish. Get the first two right and people stay at the table after the plates are cleared.
Our modern chandeliers supply the table-scaled fixtures here, joined by a long linear piece and a short run of pendants that work over a table. Finishes include antique brass, matte black iron, milk glass, smoke glass and clear globes, all chosen for the warm, low light we look for across our luxury home lighting.
Sizing a dining room chandelier to the table
Size from the table, not the room. A dining room chandelier should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of the tabletop. On a 40-inch-wide table, that means a fixture somewhere around 20 to 27 inches across.
Dining room chandelier shapes for round and long tables
A round or square table wants a round fixture centered over it. A long rectangular table looks best with a linear chandelier or two matching fixtures spaced along its length. One small round chandelier over a long table leaves both ends in shadow.
Hanging height for a dining room chandelier
Hang the bottom of the fixture about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on an eight-foot ceiling, and add about three inches for each extra foot of ceiling. Too high and the table loses its pool of light. Too low and the fixture blocks the view across it. Before you fix the height, sit down and check that you can see the face opposite you beneath the fixture.
One dining room chandelier or a pair of pendants
A single chandelier makes the table the center of the room and suits a formal space. Two or three pendants spread light along a longer table and feel more relaxed, which is why they work in kitchens that double as dining rooms. Our modern pendant light range has more shapes to compare if you lean that way. Center pendants on the table, not the room, since tables often sit shifted toward a window or a wall. With either choice, warm bulbs and a dimmer let you bring the light down once the meal is served.
Dining room chandelier finish and glass
Antique brass at the table
Under a warm bulb, brass tints the light slightly golden, which suits food and faces, and many of these are brass for that reason.
Matte black dining room lighting with glass
Matte black frames with milk or frosted glass give an even, soft light with a graphic outline. Smoke glass dims the output for long dinners. Clear globes keep the fixture open and airy while showing the bulb. For the table, chairs and sideboard that sit under it, see our luxury dining room furniture.
Dimmer than you expect
Most dining rooms look better with the chandelier set a little lower in brightness than seems necessary at first. A bright table with soft walls behind it makes a full room feel closer.
