In the mid fifties most people did not furnish a bedroom one piece at a time. You went to a showroom and bought the suite: a long low dresser with a mirror, a bed, and a pair of nightstands, all cut from one flitch of walnut or teak and finished on the same afternoon. The matched set was the design, not the sales pitch

In most styles a matching bedroom set is the shortcut that flattens a room. Here it is the historical fact. So the question in a mid century modern bedroom is not whether to match but which of the old rules still fit a house built sixty years later. Three of them do not, and all three are about size.

The long dresser was drawn for a double bed

The standard mattress of the period was the full, fifty four inches across. Queen and king sizes came later. As Wikipedia puts it, larger mattresses were introduced in the mid-1940s and "first made a significant impact on the market in the 1950s and 1960s." A six drawer dresser that looked generous beside a double looks short beside a seventy six inch king. Walls were colour

White walls came later, with the magazines. The period rooms had olive, mustard, slate blue and a dark bottle green, and teak sits beautifully against all of them because its orange undertone needs something to push against. Break the set in one place only

If you are buying new, match the dresser and nightstands exactly, same veneer, same pull, same leg, and let the bed be the one piece that differs, in upholstery or a slightly darker stain. Break it anywhere else and the room loses its spine. The mistake I see most is the reverse: a matched bed and nightstands with an unrelated dresser across the room, which reads as a set that lost a member. Vintage or new

A real vintage suite is worth the trouble when the veneer is intact and the drawers still run true. Pull every drawer fully out before you buy; wooden runners wear into grooves, and lifting veneer on a top is expensive to fix well.
