On a square dining table every person gets a side of their own, close enough to pass a dish without standing. Within our dining table collection, the square tables run mostly 36" to 48" across, in hand-rubbed black mahogany, matte black metal, espresso rubberwood, mango and bamboo.
Sizing a Square Dining Table
A square table is less flexible than it looks. Seat one more guest than it was planned for and someone ends up on a corner.
Most tops here sit between 36" and 48", sized for a nook, a kitchen or a room centered under one pendant. At the far end, a 60" square in black mahogany on a pedestal is built for a larger room that wants a grand, centered table.
Leave about 36" from each edge to the wall. A 42" top therefore needs roughly 114" of open floor in each direction, which is why square tables settle so well into square rooms.
Square or Round Table for a Small Group
Both shapes keep a small group close. A square tucks into a corner or pushes flat against a banquette.
A round needs space all around it. If the room has walkways on every side, compare our Round Dining Tables before you decide.
Square Dining Tables in Mahogany and Metal
Black and Pale Mahogany Square Tables
Mahogany gives a square its gravity. Hand-rubbed black mahogany at 40" and 42" reads almost lacquered under low light, with grain that shows only when a lamp finds it.
A 39" pale mahogany square with carving goes the other way, lighter and more decorative, suited to a room with older architecture. Repeat the wood once elsewhere in the room, perhaps a console from the wider range of modern tables, and the square stops looking like a lone piece.
Matte Black Metal Square Tables
Matte black metal squares at 36" and 48" draw a thin outline and let the floor show through. They suit small kitchens and dark-walled rooms where a heavy wood table would close the space in.
Rubberwood, Mango and Bamboo Tables
Solid rubberwood in a deep espresso finish brings a warm, dark tone to kitchens and breakfast rooms, and sits well beside cabinetry in a similar wood. There are also tops in mango and bamboo.
When a Square Is Not Enough
If you regularly seat more than the four sides allow, move to our Rectangular Dining Tables, which give the extra guests a full edge instead of a corner.
Chairs for a Square Table
Four chairs, one per side, is the arrangement a square is drawn for. Choose chairs no wider than about two thirds of a side, so they tuck in fully when the table is not in use, and keep their backs low enough that the tabletop still reads from across the room.
A square table rewards symmetry. Center it under the light, give it four matching chairs, and let the corners of the room stay quiet.
How many people does a square dining table seat?
A square table seats one person per side. Smaller squares in the 36" to 42" range are comfortable for that arrangement, while a large square like the 60" black mahogany pedestal table gives each seat more elbow room. If you often host more people, a rectangular or extendable table will serve you better.
What sizes do square dining tables come in?
Most square tables in this collection run from 36" to 48" across, including 36" and 48" matte black metal tops, a 39" pale mahogany table and 40" and 42" black mahogany pieces. The largest is a 60" square in hand-rubbed black mahogany on a pedestal base.
Is a square or round table better for a small dining room?
A square table fits better against a wall, in a corner or beside a banquette, because its straight sides sit flush. A round table moves traffic more easily when there are walkways on every side. Measure where people actually walk through the room, then choose the shape that keeps those paths clear.
What materials are square dining tables made from?
The collection leans on mahogany, in hand-rubbed black and in a pale carved finish, and on matte black metal. There are also solid rubberwood tables in an espresso finish, plus pieces in mango, bamboo, teak, brass and reclaimed wood. Black is the most common finish across the group.
