That item has been discontinued, but here are similar options.
A long low case on legs does something to a dining room that nothing else does. It gives the room a horizon. The eye settles on that line, the wall above opens up, and the floor keeps running underneath, which is why a room with one always reads larger than the same room with a chest pushed flat to the baseboard.
That horizon is the argument for the piece, and it is the same instinct running through the whole mid century modern catalog. Storage, serving surface, somewhere the lamp can finally live: all of it follows from the line.
Sideboard, buffet, credenza: the difference that matters
People use the three words interchangeably and mostly get away with it. The useful distinction is where the piece sits and what it holds. A sideboard buffet runs long and low against a dining wall and holds what the table needs. A mid century modern credenza is the same silhouette doing office or living room duty, often with a cabinet instead of drawers. The mid century pieces blur the line on purpose, because the designers built one cabinet and let the room decide what to call it. Buy for proportion, not vocabulary.
The measurement most people get wrong
Two thirds. A sideboard should run roughly two thirds the length of the mid century modern dining table it serves, or two thirds of its wall, whichever is shorter. Longer and the piece starts competing with the table for the room's attention. Much shorter and it reads as a stranded box. That is why a 72 inch cabinet under a ten foot wall looks considered and a 40 inch one looks like it wandered in.
Height matters less than people fear. Anything from 30 to 34 inches works, because that is counter range and your hands already know it.
Wood tone, and the trap of matching
A walnut sideboard beside a walnut table in the same finish flattens that end of the room into one brown mass. Two or three shades apart is where both pieces stay legible and the grain in each still reads. It is the same rule that governs the mid century modern beds and the case goods around them, and it is how the era was actually furnished. Nobody bought the matched seven piece set. They bought a good cabinet, then something else.
Teak runs warmer and goes amber under lamplight. Walnut holds its depth and turns nearly black in a shadowed corner. Oak stays pale and honest all day. Pick for the hour you use the room, which for most houses is after dark.
What the mid century version does differently
Legs, first. The cabinet floats four to six inches off the floor on tapered legs, and that gap does real work. Light travels under it. The rug keeps going. A room with visible floor beneath its largest cabinet feels meaningfully bigger than one without.
Then the front. Drawer faces sit flush with the frame, pulls are cut into the wood rather than bolted on, and the grain runs continuously across the doors because the panels were cut from one board in sequence. That last detail separates a real mid century sideboard cabinet from something merely low and wooden. Look at the seam between two doors. If the grain carries across, the maker cared.
Where else it goes
The dining wall is the obvious home, and the mid century modern dining room is built around it. The same cabinet also works behind a sofa, under a television, along an upstairs hallway, or in a bedroom taking the overflow the mid century modern dressers cannot hold. In an entryway a mid century modern console table is usually the better call, being shallower and less likely to eat the walking lane.
Check depth before you commit. Sixteen to eighteen inches disappears against a wall. Past twenty and you will feel it every time you walk by.
Styling it without killing the line
The mistake is treating the top as shelf space. This piece earns its keep by staying mostly empty. Three objects at varying heights, one of them a lamp, and a good deal of bare wood between them. The long horizontal is the point, and every additional object shortens it.
Hang art or a mirror so its bottom edge lands six to eight inches above the surface. Closer and it looks stuck on. Further and the two stop talking to each other, and you have two separate events on one wall.
Then light it low, from the surface rather than the ceiling. Overhead light finds every fingerprint and flattens the grain. A lamp sitting on the cabinet does the opposite: the wood comes up warm, the shadows lengthen along that horizontal, and the whole end of the room goes quiet.
