The Matthew Williams Collection is furniture you reach for: the table beside the sofa, the chair pulled toward the lamp, the stool at the kitchen counter. Matthew Williams is the home furnishings designer behind these pieces, Uttermost produces them, and they lean warm and a little dark.
Matthew Williams furniture lives at hand height
Most of the Matthew Williams Collection, produced by Uttermost, sits between knee and elbow: side tables, accent chests, benches, counter stools. There is very little sofa here. These are the pieces your hand finds in the dark, so judge them at arm's length.
Look at the grain on a drawer front and the edge of a stone top before the silhouette. Most side tables look alike from across a room. Under a low bulb, they stop looking alike.
Matthew Williams, the furniture designer behind the collection
At 26, in 1998, he designed the Balloon lamp and the Maitland-Smith Monkey lamp, which broke Maitland-Smith's lighting sales records. He had come from industrial design, with a Bachelor of Industrial Design from NC State's College of Design and Rubbermaid products that won Bronze and Silver IDEA awards. He became VP of Design at Maitland-Smith in 2001, then worked in merchandising at Universal Furniture and as executive VP at Garcia Imports. Uttermost added him as a designer in February 2008, together with David Frisch, and AURA carries David Frisch furniture as well. In 2012 he co-founded Reunion, a high-end accent furniture and lamp company, with Antony Maitland Smith.
Burl, marble and oak side tables from the Matthew Williams Collection
Lamplight flattens plain finishes and picks out figure. Burl and open-grained oak give a warm bulb something to catch, which is why the burl and marble side tables here look better at night than in a daylight photo.
Measure the sofa arm before choosing a side table
Keep the tabletop within a couple of inches of the arm beside it. Much higher, and a lamp set on it starts to glare at eye level. The 32" natural oak side table with two drawers and brass legs earns its width: the drawers hide remotes and coasters, which is most of what visual quiet means next to a sofa.
Leather and boucle seating by the Uttermost designer
Cognac top grain leather on the armless dining chairs and charcoal gray leather on the counter stool with an aged gold iron base read Old Money and Vintage. The boucle barrel accent chairs go the other way: soft loops, no shine. On the 28" natural version, a brushed gold frame holds the curve.
Mixing brass and gold finishes across Matthew Williams designs
Brass, brushed gold, aged gold and bronze all appear in this range, and under warm light they rarely match. Three in one sightline and the room looks assembled, so choose one warm metal per view and let leather or wood carry the rest.
Faux shagreen and travertine accents from the Matthew Williams Collection
If you are mixing designers, Jim Parsons furniture is the next page to open. Give one designer the large pieces and let the other supply the small ones. Here the small pieces repeat a texture without repeating the furniture: faux shagreen trays and boxes, travertine boxes and candle holders, burl or faux shagreen nesting tables.
The 91" ivory faux sheepskin daybed bench is one of the larger pieces in the collection. It looks right with the overhead light off, pale against a dark wall, holding only what the lamps give it.
