A 72 inch freestanding tub is the size where a bath stops being something you fold yourself into. At this length a tall adult can lie back with legs straight and shoulders under water, and the tub takes over the room the way a bed takes over a bedroom. Of all our modern tubs, these are the ones that set the floor plan rather than fit into it.
Every tub on this page runs 70 to 72 inches long and 31 to about 33.5 inches wide, in white or matte white acrylic. The shapes range from the soft double slipper Juno to the crisp rectangular Soho and the tapered Mermaid. If depth matters more to you than length, a deep soaking tub with a raised slipper back trades a few inches of length for taller walls.
Is a 72 inch freestanding bathtub right for the room?
Most primary bathrooms can hold one. Fewer can hold one well. A large freestanding tub needs four to six inches between it and any wall you cannot reach behind, plus roughly thirty inches of clear floor where you step in. Add those up and a 72 inch tub wants about 80 inches of wall before it looks placed instead of wedged.
Large freestanding tubs and the bather
Measure the person, not just the room. Sit on the floor with your back against a wall, legs straight, and measure from the wall to your heels. That is roughly the interior length you need. Tall bathers feel the difference between 66 and 72 inches far more than the spec sheet suggests.
How much a filled 72 inch tub weighs
The common mistake is checking the tub's shipping weight and stopping there. The Juno lists a 95 gallon maximum fill. Water runs a little over eight pounds a gallon, so that is close to 800 pounds of water before anyone steps in. Have a contractor look at the framing under the spot you have chosen, especially on a second floor.
72 inch tubs for two, or for one
A double slipper with a center drain is the honest choice for two people, since both ends slope and nobody draws the drain end. For one bather, a single raised back gives the better seat. Rectangular tubs like the Soho read the most architectural but give the least room to recline.
A 72 inch freestanding tub with faucet
Many of these come with a floor mounted filler in matte black, brushed gold, polished chrome or brushed nickel. Its supply lines rise through the floor, so place the tub before the floor is finished. To compare every model sold with the filler, see the freestanding tub and faucet sets.
Placing a large bathtub in a primary suite
Center the tub on a window or on the long axis of the room. A big tub pushed into a corner looks like it was left there by the movers.
What a long tub does after dark
At this size the tub is the brightest thing in a dim room. Keep the walls behind it plain and the light low and to one side, so the long white rim reads as one clean line across the floor.
