A mirror is the only thing you hang that you cannot actually see. You look at it and you get the room back, slightly rearranged, one wall further away than it really is. Which means the frame is the smallest part of the decision and the thing standing opposite is the largest. Choose the reflection first. Everything else is shopping.

Start with what the glass is aimed at, not the mirror photo gallery

Walk to where you actually stand in the room and look hard at the wall opposite the one you had in mind. Whatever is there is what you are about to hang, doubled and lit. If it is a window, you have found the best position in the house and the mirror will pay for itself in winter. If it is a doorway, the room gains depth and the hall gains a second exit that the eye reads before the brain corrects it, which is the whole argument for entryway mirrors.

Most mirror inspiration skips the glass itself

Most of it stops at the frame. Brass or black, round or arched, thin or chunky. Useful, but it skips the variable that changes the room more than any of those, which is how reflective the glass is allowed to be. Among the wall mirrors, clear glass gives you a hard, bright, literal copy. Antiqued and smoked glass lowers the contrast of everything it returns, which is precisely why a dark room can carry a very large mirror without turning into a lightbox.

The size question, answered honestly

Go bigger than feels reasonable and then check one thing. Over a console, or in the position most bathroom mirrors take, the glass should run roughly two thirds to three quarters of the furniture below it, and its centre should land near eye height for whoever uses the room most. Over a fireplace, stand back and check what the angle actually returns. A mirror tipped even slightly forward above a mantel spends its life showing people the ceiling.

Floor mirrors are a different object entirely

A leaning mirror is furniture, not wall decor, and it behaves like a doorway cut into the room. It wants a little floor in front of it and something worth reflecting across the way. In a bedroom it doubles the light from one window into two. Browse the floor mirrors against that test rather than against height alone, because a tall mirror aimed at a blank corner is just an expensive grey rectangle.

The mistake almost everyone makes once

Hanging it opposite the mess. A mirror facing a cluttered counter, a wall of doors, or a television gives you all of that twice, and the room reads busier the moment it goes up. The fix costs nothing. Before you drill, hold a phone camera flat against the wall and look at the screen. That is your reflection, previewed. If the picture is not worth repeating, move the mirror or tidy the opposite wall first.
