Art Deco Interior Design Ideas

This is the only style on the site with a date attached to it. Not a mood, not a material palette, a period: roughly 1925 to the outbreak of the war, with a specific set of confidences behind it. That date is an asset and a trap at once, and every decision here comes down to one question most people have not asked out loud yet. Are you restoring a period, or quoting one?

The two answers want different houses. Restoration wants original casing, a building that already agrees with you, and a tolerance for lacquer and inlay and mirror in quantity. Quotation wants a normal contemporary room that takes a few deco moves and leaves the rest alone. Both are legitimate. Which gives the rule worth taking away. Quote the geometry, modernize the material. A fluted cabinet in matte dark oak reads as deco and as now. The same cabinet in high-gloss faux ebony with brass inlay reads as a set piece, and you will tire of it long before the finish does.

Sunbursts, chevrons, zigzag inlay, fan backs. All authentic, all the easiest part to buy and the hardest to live with, and the reason so many rooms assembled from saved images look staged. Ornament was the surface of the movement, massing was the structure. A room built on structure carries one piece of ornament beautifully; a room built on ornament alone has nothing underneath it, and no amount of pattern fixes that.

The mistake follows directly. Pattern stacked on pattern: a sunburst mirror above a chevron floor against geometric paper with a fan-back chair in front. Each element cancels the next and you get noise where rhythm was intended. Let one surface carry the pattern and keep the rest solid. In a dark room that single pattern reads from the doorway. Deco furniture is shaped to catch light along an edge. A fluted front, a stepped corner, the curve of an arm: each profile takes a highlight and drops away into shadow behind it. So the practical move, before buying anything, is to take the overheads out of the evening and put three or four low warm sources around the room at furniture height. Use lamps you already own.
