Sizing to a two-seat sofa
The two-thirds rule scales down honestly. A loveseat around 60 inches wants a table near 30 to 36 inches wide; anything longer starts crowding the arms and anything much shorter looks like a side table that wandered. Height matters more in small rooms than large ones, since an over-tall table in a compact space reads like a barricade. Aim for a top within an inch or two of the seat cushion, and the coffee table for a small living room stops fighting the sofa and starts working for it.
Leave the walking room
Sixteen to eighteen inches between sofa and table is the comfortable reach; twenty-four to thirty inches is the comfortable walk on the traffic side.
