Large gold mirrors can hold a wall on their own. Every frame here measures 48 inches or more on its longest side, big enough to take the place of a painting over a sofa, a bed, a mantel or a console, and to send real light back into the room rather than a glint.
These are the oversized pieces in our gold and brass mirror collection: wide rectangles up to 99 inches for long sideboards and mantels, big rounds up to 60 inches across in gold leaf, and broad arches and ovals, finished in gold leaf, antiqued gold, antique brass and golden bronze. If the wall you are filling is tall and narrow rather than wide, the tall gold floor mirrors are made for that job.
How big a large gold mirror should be
Size a large gold framed mirror to two thirds of the furniture
The two thirds rule still holds at this size. Over a sofa, a sideboard or a bed, aim for a mirror about two thirds the width of the piece below. Much narrower and it looks lost; much wider and the furniture looks undersized. Over a mantel, keep the frame a little narrower than the shelf so the stone or wood still frames it.
Tape it on the wall first
Photos mislead on oversized mirrors. Mark the outline on the wall with painter's tape and live with it for a day. A 48 inch frame looks modest on a screen and much bigger over a bed in a small room, and the tape settles the question before the box arrives.
Where an oversized gold mirror changes the room
A large gold mirror over the sofa
Over a sofa, a wide frame stretches the room sideways and gives the seating a backdrop that feels lighter than art. Hang the bottom of the frame eight to ten inches above the sofa back so heads do not brush it. A big round gold mirror does the same job with a softer outline, useful when the sofa, rug and windows are all straight lines.
A gold framed mirror over the mantel
Above a fireplace, a large mirror becomes the focal point without competing with the fire. Rest a deep frame on the mantel and let it lean slightly, or hang it a few inches above so the shelf still reads as a ledge. Either way, keep the mantel styling sparse. Two objects beside an oversized mirror is plenty.
A wide gold framed mirror over the bed or console
Over a bed, a wide gold frame gives the wall the weight of a large piece of art. Keep it a little narrower than the headboard and let it pick up a brass lamp or a warm wood nightstand. Over a long console in the entry or dining room, a horizontal frame reflects the light of a pair of lamps and makes a shallow piece of furniture feel more substantial.
Oversized gold mirror weight and hanging
Frames this size are heavy, and iron or wood pieces can weigh well over 50 pounds. Hang them into studs or on anchors rated for the weight, use the hardware supplied with the mirror, and get a second pair of hands. Never trust an oversized mirror to a single nail.
