A 9x12 rug is the largest size most rooms will ever need, the one that turns a big open floor into a single defined room instead of a stretch of leftover space. Getting the Border Right
The mistake at this size is fitting a 9x12 into a room that cannot spare the floor, so the rug runs almost to the skirting and the space feels tight. Give it air. Aim for a hand's width to a foot of bare floor on every side, kept even, and the room reads framed rather than filled. If the clearance drops below that, the next size down will sit better.
Across a field this large the border is what the eye catches first, drawing the room inward before the pattern registers. A worked design does real work here, carrying traffic along a room's main path without looking tired. Measure the room first, subtract the border you want on all sides, and let that number decide whether a 9x12 is the size or a stretch.
