Marble, wood and the marks that make a table look inherited

Shoppable living rooms where the coffee table is allowed to show its age.

More vintage old money ideas

Here is the test I run on any table meant to look inherited. Set a cold glass on it, walk away, and picture the ring five years from now. If the ring would read as history, the table belongs in an old money room. If it would read as damage, keep looking.

Vintage old money coffee table photos, read for wear

Three rooms, three tables, and not one of them is a trunk. A white marble top on an antique bronze base shares its room with a black leather sofa and a cognac armchair. A 50 inch dark brown wood rectangle works with a camel sofa and a rope floor lamp. A 40 inch black marble round keeps company with a dark green modular sofa and a dark brown leather chair. All of them belong with our vintage old money coffee tables, and all of them will look better after a few years of use than on delivery day.

White marble, warm metal

White marble on its own turns chilly once the sun drops. Set it on aged bronze and the base does the warming: under a shaded lamp the metal throws a low brown glow back into the stone, and the top stops looking clinical. Searches for marble topped vintage tables are up more than 80 percent this year; buy honed rather than polished if you can. Marble etches when lemon or wine sits on it. On a high polish every etch is a dull scar; on a honed face it simply joins the surface. Our marble coffee tables come in both, so check the finish before you fall for the color.

Black marble in the round

The round black top is the one I would put in a room full of square leather. Next to a long sofa and a deep armchair the missing corners matter more than the shape suggests: knees, shins and the dog all get a clear path. Few vintage old money coffee table pictures mention it, but dark stone hides the etching that white reveals. Nothing hides a corner you keep walking into. If the room is still half empty, start with the sofa from our luxury living room furniture and size the round to it, never the other way around.

Wood, and the case for scratches

The dark brown rectangle is the quiet option and, I think, the most honest one. With wood, the finish is the whole decision. Oiled wood takes a scratch and lets you rub it back with more oil until it sinks into the grain. Lacquer chips, and a chip in dark lacquer shows pale. In daylight an oiled top looks almost flat; by lamplight the grain lifts and the surface reads as depth rather than color. If you are building the rest of the room around it, our vintage old money living room furniture carries the same browns and blacks, so nothing has to be matched by eye.

Vintage old money coffee table ideas for the books on top

Interest in vintage coffee table books, the books rather than the furniture, has more than doubled this year. People already sense what the top of an old money table is for. Not a tray of objects. A stack of real books with creased spines, read and put back, with one heavy thing on the pile so it never looks staged. Leave two thirds of the surface bare. Browse the rooms in the Dark Luxury Lookbook and you will see that restraint again and again: the table carries what is being used, and almost nothing else.

What I pass on

The trunk

Trunks are the classic vintage move, and searches for them have fallen by about a third. I am not surprised. A trunk has no overhang, so your knees meet its side, and it has a lid, so opening it means clearing the top first.

The glass

Glass has the opposite problem. It never ages, so it never looks inherited, and at night it bounces the lamp back at you instead of holding the light. For vintage old money coffee table inspiration that survives daily life, look at stone and wood first, and borrow from our wider vintage old money furniture for anything that needs to look found.

The mistake is buying age off the shelf. Factory distressing, the rubbed edges and the fake wormholes, reads as costume within a week because the marks are too even. Scroll any vintage old money coffee table gallery and the rooms look finished, as if they arrived that way. They did not. They got their character one glass, one book and one careless heel at a time. Choose the surface that will earn its marks, then let it.
