Japandi Lighting
That item has been discontinued, but here are similar options.
Japandi lighting is about softening light before it reaches you. Paper, cotton, woven fiber and frosted glass sit between the bulb and the room, so what you see is a glow rather than a source. In a room built on pale wood, plaster and a few good pieces, that softness keeps the calm intact after dark.
Here are the quieter pieces from our high end lighting: cotton-shaded table and floor lamps, woven and paper pendants, bead and frosted glass shades, and simple frames in beige, taupe, black and natural tones.
What makes a japandi lamp work
A japandi lamp has three traits: a quiet base, a shade that hides the bulb, and a shape that would look right with the light off. If a lamp only looks good lit, it will spend most of the day looking wrong.
Shade first, base second
The shade material decides the character of the light. Cotton gives a warm, even glow. Woven paper throws a slightly textured light onto nearby walls. Frosted glass gives the cleanest, most even light. The base should stay low-key, in matte steel, beige or natural tones, so the shade carries the look.
Mix the heights
Japandi rooms rely on rhythm, and three lamps at the same height flatten it. Mix one low table lamp, one tall floor lamp and one pendant, and the room feels layered without adding anything busy.
A japandi pendant light over the table
A woven or paper pendant over a dining table or a bed is one of the clearest ways to show the style. Hang it a little lower than you would a metal fixture, about 30 inches above a table, so it belongs to the furniture group instead of the ceiling. A large woven dome over a small table works well; keep the rest of the room plain around it.
A japandi floor lamp for the reading corner
A tall cotton-shaded floor lamp beside a low chair gives soft light for evening reading without turning the room bright. Keep the bulb warm so the cotton glows rather than glares, and place the lamp so the shade, not the bulb, is what you see from the chair.
Japandi lamp or dark academia lamp?
Japandi shares a habit with dark academia lighting: both reject the bright overhead and live on lamps. The difference is material. Dark academia leans on brass and smoke glass; japandi leans on fiber, paper and pale wood. If your room sits between the two, a black frame with a cotton shade bridges them.
Japandi lighting with low, natural furniture
Japandi light looks best against low, natural-toned pieces. Pull the wood tones of your table, bed and chairs from our japandi furniture, then let the lighting soften the edges between them.
Keep it quiet
If a lamp starts to pull attention away from the room, it is probably the wrong one for this style. The right one is barely noticed until it is switched off and the room feels colder.
