The open back is the entire design decision. A horizontal top rail connects two vertical posts, the center of the back fully empty: no splats, no upholstery, no fill. The seat is a slightly saddled solid ash surface that curves gently under the body. Four thick square legs extend to the floor, the mass of each equal from top to bottom with no tapering. The walnut-stained white ash reads warm brown throughout, the grain of the ash just visible beneath the finish, the color deep enough to read as almost walnut.
What chairs with fully open backs do in a room: they add almost no visual weight. At a dining table, the negative space of each back reads as part of the room rather than a solid object. Fewer solid planes accumulating at table level. For this form in particular, the proportion of negative space to solid surface tips toward open - the chair reads as more air than material when seen from across the room. In the Daifuku family with the matching table, the material language is continuous and the combination reads as a resolved collection rather than a coordinated set. Moe Samieian Sr. arrived in Canada with an engineering degree and almost nowhere to use it. So he sold rugs at road shows, worked on commission, and learned the retail floor through years of direct customer contact.
In 1986 he opened his first store in Vancouver. Walking the trade shows, he kept noticing the same thing: most furniture looked identical. So he started hunting for pieces with something to say. Antiques. Flea-market finds. Objects with texture and history. More stores followed, and in 1999 he moved decisively into wholesale.
His children Sara and Moe Jr. carried that instinct forward. Not what merely sells. What resonates. That distinction still drives every collection.
The materials earn their place. Wood warms the edges. Stone steadies the eye. Steel adds tension. Glass lets the composition breathe. A hand-worked surface keeps a modern room from feeling too resolved.
The goal was never perfection. It was presence.

The Craft
Material First - Trend Second
Every collection is designed in-house, then built through a manufacturing network developed over decades. Vietnam, India, Italy, Poland, Canada, the USA. Not the lowest-cost option in any of those places. Long-term makers who've been held to the same standards long enough that the standards stopped needing to be explained.
The construction is what you'd expect from that kind of relationship. Solid hardwood frames. High-density foam. Hardware that doesn't announce itself by failing early. These are not selling points so much as baseline expectations that a lot of furniture quietly fails to meet.
The materials go further than that. Acacia grain that no engineered surface comes close to replicating. Stone that grounds a room both visually and physically, which are different things and both matter. Mixed metals chosen for tension rather than coordination. FSC-certified wood and responsible sourcing throughout, though the more honest argument for it shows up over time, in how the pieces age rather than what the spec sheet says.
